Downtown Public Realm Framework
City of Minneapolis, 2016
Downtown Minneapolis has experienced significant growth in recent years, particularly in the residential population. The Downtown Public Realm Framework Plan is a policy document that establishes a framework for private development to invest in public realm enhancement. The plan establishes a typology of public corridors and guides enhancement on each corridor type to encourage a diversity of activity in the public realm through greening, furnishing, and programming strategies. These strategies are coordinated with adopted land use guidance to be implemented as development occurs. As part of the public outreach process, the urban design team engaged artist Stephanie Glaros of 'Humans of Minneapolis' to gather the impressions of Downtown residents and visitors.
The plan was formally adopted by the Minneapolis City Council in 2016.
Corridor Typology
As part of the research process, urban design staff created an online visual inventory of all public realm furnishings and enhancement in order to understand the existing distribution of elements and activites.
